Long term partnerships yield high end results: Beginning in 2018, the Baltimore County Soil Conservation District partnered with Roseda Farms and Ecotone to develop an ecological restoration project utilizing sustainable agricultural best management practices. The practices shown were installed and designed to improve water quality and habitat conditions while seamlessly maintaining agricultural operations and productivity. Here is compelling evidence that ecological restoration and productive agriculture are not mutually exclusive. In 2015 Ecotone restored North Stirrup Run within an active cattle farm. Using only native materials, the project has restored water quality and ecological function to a tributary to Deer Creek while maintaining agricultural productivity. Typically during stream restoration, compaction of the soil is neglected due to trying to achieve specific grades for floodplain width, bench height, and other stream bank factors. The compacted soil which is left behind after restoration does not provide the best growing environment for trees and other plant life planted along the stream banks. By breaking up the compacted soil once the banks have been constructed to grade, it creates a much healthier growing environment.
