Triangle Park WET SWALE
Ecotone was contracted by the Center for Watershed Protection (CWP) to construct a stormwater treatment wet swale located within the Town of Rising Sun in Cecil County, Maryland. The project partners, Town of Rising Sun and Octoraro Watershed Association, received two grants through the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund to implement a 450 linear foot stormwater treatment wet swale combined with a 1.6 acre off-leash dog park.
Ecotone was responsible for construction the wet swale which consisted of a series of forebays, cobble aprins, and excavated pools. Over time, these techniques improve water quality, specifically to Stone Run in this case – a tributary to Octoraro Creek. A wetland seed mix was broadcasted throughout the linear wetland feature to improve riparian buffer habitat, nutrient uptake, and sediment trapping.
Following wet swale stabilization, Ecotone completed the overall site grading for installation of the incorporated dog park and its associated landscape materials. These materials included sidewalks, walkways, K-9 grass, benches, picnic tables, and a parking lot.
Topsoil was stripped and stockpiled onsite and fine grading was completed to create the foundations for landscape features, such as a rain garden. Construction was completed in July of 2013 and the project has been viewed as a success and stepping stone to implementing a larger passive recreation and trail plan for the surrounding community.
