Peacher Shallow Water Development and Management

  • Location: Harford County, MD
  • Completion Date: July 2013

Working with the landowner and Harford County Soil Conservation District, Ecotone, Inc. was responsible for designing and creating two shallow water development and management areas adjacent to an unnamed tributary to Thomas Run in Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland.

The shallow water wetland features were designed and constructed per the specifications of the USDA NRCS Shallow Water Development and Management Practice Code 646. Project elements included minor grading and construction of a low profile berm within an existing agricultural field to improve water quality and provide habitat within the Thomas Run watershed. The site was designed with the continued agricultural uses in mind.

A water control box and vegetated rock weir were installed to capture and retain receiving hydrology. A vegetated buffer consisting of warm season grasses was planted upslope of the impoundment to provide additional water quality enhancement by means of nutrient attenuation. Ecotone completed all major earth work on the site, including stabilization in July, 2013.

Project Highlights:
  • 0.86 acres of Shallow Water Wetlands
  • Fine Grading & Excavation
  • Water Control Box
  • Earthen Berm/ Spillway Weir
